Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the option to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
